We’ve all heard the stories of famous people who had rough or bumpy starts. Here’s a few for the record:

Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds: In 1959, a Universal Pictures executive dismissed them at the same meeting with the following statements. To Burt Reynolds: “You have no talent.” To Clint Eastwood: “You have a chip on your tooth, your Adam’s apple sticks out too far and you talk too slow.

Thomas Edison: He was one of the greatest inventors in American history. When he first attended school in Port Huron, Mich., his teachers complained that he was “too slow” and hard to handle. As a result, Edison’s mother decided to take her son out of school and teach him at home. In his lifetime, Edison produced more than 1,300 inventions.

Abraham Lincoln: He entered the Blackhawk War as a captain. By the end of the war, he had been demoted to the rank of private.

Little Things Can Make a Big Difference!

Here are three simple tips to improve chair-side procedures for you and your patients.

Tip #1: Applying Consepsis
If you have never tasted the Ultradent product, Consepsis, you don’t know what you’re missing! As affective and important as it is during your bonding procedure, it tastes horrible. The syringe provided with the product for application tends to cause the liquid to flow everywhere and it is difficult to prevent having the patient taste the material. Try inserting the syringe tip into the end of a cotton roll and saturate the cotton roll. Then simply place the end of the cotton roll onto each prepared tooth to apply the Consepsis.

Tip #2: Finishing Margin
To prevent possible laceration of tissue and increase visibility and access to margin areas of your preparation, use the Zekyra instrument. The soft metal tip can be bent to fit the exact contour of the marginal area and is used to gently reflect the gingival tissue out of your way.

Tip #3: Handle Sensitivity Without More Anesthesia
Sometimes when preparing upper and lower arch restorations in one seating, anesthesia begins to wear off on the completed upper preps prior to impressions and before you are finished preparing the lowers. A simple technique that can often avoid having to administer more anesthesia is to inject Blue Mousse (bite registration material) over the prepared teeth until you are ready for impressions. Once ready for impressions, remove the material and proceed.

Editor’s note: We are creating an interest list of doctors who would like to attend a “LOWER ARCH” Over-The-Shoulder at Dr. Miller’s office in Scottsdale, possibly during the winter months ahead when weather is beautiful and golfing is great.
