Becden’s equipment maintenance protocol calls for the calibration of all articulators in the laboratory every three months or immediately if dropped (even if no damage is visible). At our most recent calibration out of 80 articulators, 3 were found to need adjustments. It is our recommendation that your articulators also be calibrated, at least yearly and also if ever dropped. This service is complimentary for Becden clients with the exception of shipping costs and repair parts, if needed. In most cases the calibration can be completed and shipped on the day the articulator is received.
At Becden we currently have the calibration standards and blocks for most articulation systems, provided to us by each manufacturer. We also have a supply of common repair parts in stock and if major repairs are needed will ship the articulator directly to the manufacturer. The calibration process includes; mounting the block and making necessary adjustments, steam cleaning the articulator, lubricating it with silicone spray, labeling with the date of calibration, and repairing or replacing any damaged parts.
Dennis recently worked with a doctor whose crowns were consistently 1.5 mm out of occlusion. After reviewing our fabrication processes at the lab and the doctor’s impression material, temporization material, and temporization technique without finding any potential causes for the occlusion discrepancy, Dennis had the doctor send his articulator to me for calibration and “bingo” the problem was solved! Even if your crowns drop in every time it’s still important to keep your articulators calibrated and in good repair. Contact me if you have additional questions or concerns.
