Through ancient Greece, the European Renaissance, down to the modern era, many have shared the concept that main objective for art is to imitate reality. When using artificial materials we can only recreate reality by using some guidelines we find in nature. These guidelines are mathematical laws and principles that scientists and artists alike have discovered to aid in our understanding of the balance of nature. We commonly refer to this as “The Golden Proportion”. What we do in dentistry is an art and a science. By applying these rules of proportion we are creating something to look and function just as it should in nature. We are imitating reality.
This piece titled “Harmonic Perspective” is a representation of these various principles integrating to form beauty and balance, and suggest there is no such thing as a single unit. Just as there must exist a proportionate balance within the key facial components (eyes, ears, nose, and mouth) there must also exist and equally dynamic relationship between knowledge, vision, creativity, and the proper tools to achieve natural dentofacial esthetics.

David Anderson joined our team at Becden Dental Laboratory in December 2004. He found interest in art and philosophy at a very young age. His influences include Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Rene Magritte, and Alex Grey. He apprenticed into dental technology at age nine and followed the eyes and work of Willi Geller, Klaus Mutherthies, and many others. David enjoys applying his talents of painting and sculpture into everyday practice by turning his porcelain tray into an artist’s palette. Above all, he loves making teeth!
