On large aesthetic cases the Diagnostic Wax-Up and accompanying Matrix allow you to create temporaries so that, once in place, both you and the patient can visualize how the final restorations will look. Our technicians follow your smile design choice and other shape and size requests as they fabricate the wax-up. Upon return to the laboratory for the fabrication of the final restorations, unless otherwise noted, the technicians will follow (as much as possible) this same diagnostic wax-up.
To prevent disappointment for you or your patient it is imperative to share the following information with us:
- Let us know if the patient has approved the temporaries. After the numbness has worn off have the patient back into the office to discuss their satisfaction or concerns. Look at how their smile drapes the lower lip and listen to their speech for phonetics. It’s also great to take photographs to send to us at the laboratory. Any slight concern on the part of the patient could possibly become a major concern if it is not corrected in the finish work.
- If any changes at all are made to the temporaries fabricated from the Diagnostic Wax-Up let us know.
- If the change is something as minor as shortening or lengthening the incisal edge an exact notation on the prescription will be sufficient.
- If significant changes are made in the contours, contacts, or embrasures, take an impression of the new temporaries and instruct us to follow that model rather than the Diagnostic Wax-Up.
- If you have not made changes to the temporaries but want us to make changes in the finish work, take a close up photograph and mark (either on a print or on an email file) what areas you would like to be different.
- If by chance you have a patient who does not like anything about the temporaries and comes back with lots of concerns and requests, it is best to stop the case and have us make the changes in the Diagnostic Wax-Up and provide you with a new impression matrix so the patient can be re-temporized and evaluated a second time. Be sure to communicate all of the patient concerns for us to follow in the new wax-up. The finish work should never be started until the temporaries are to your satisfaction and are approved by the patient. Although this adds a step, it often prevents a full remake once the permanent case is bonded.
The goal of every aesthetic case is a win (for the patient) / win (for the doctor) / win (for the laboratory) and excellent communication among all parties is the key to it all!
