Technical Tip: Repair Of Fractured Post and Core
By Dr. Ed Miller

When removing a temporary it is easy to fracture a composite post and core, but it often can be repaired without redoing the entire case. The following case is an example:  A three unit zirconia bridge was prepared and temporized using Integrity. I applied Vasoline to the post and core prior to temporization to it to prevent the Integrity from sticking to it. However, during removal of the temporaries the composite core separated from the tooth. The following steps were taken to correct this.

  1. Freshen the composite and tooth with a fine diamond
  2. Rinse and dry the surface of the tooth
  3. Etch the tooth and the remaining post and core

  4. Apply Prime and Bond NT to the surface of the tooth
  5. Light cure the Prime and Bond NT
  6. Coat the inside surface of the permanent crown with Vaseline or glycerin
  7. Place a flowable composite inside the crown, using a shade that matches the dentin

  8. Seat the crown firmly and light cure through the porcelain

  9. Remove the crown, freshen the prep, clean the crown, and proceed with the cementation procedure
