Zirconia has a proven tract record of over 10 years as a framework for dental restorations. We now have the technology to fabricate long-span bridgework up to and including the molar regions.
Since Zirconia is white in color and can be stained to resemble natural dentin, it offers significantly better aesthetics than traditional PFM restorations.

This product is also an excellent choice for blocking out heavy tetracycline staining or exceptionally dark dentin. The manufacturers of Zirconia milling blocks recommend conventional cementation for all restorations.
Since it is a relatively opaque material, Zirconia can be used to cover existing root canal pin restorations. This allows clinically intact pin superstructures, which can often be quite difficult to remove, to remain in place when the tooth is prepared. If a new pin needs to be inserted, then fiberglass composite pins have proven to be compatible, since they possess elasticity similar to that of natural dentition.
Contra-indications include a lack of space in the bridge connector area since connectors must have a minimum cross-section of 9mm. This product cannot be fabricated on a feather-edge preparation and requires a 360degree chamfer or shoulder.
Although the low thermal conductivity of a Zirconia restoration provides excellent insulation for the pulp, on occasion endodontic treatment may be required. Axis Dental (800-355-5063) has produced a new generation of diamonds to allow you to easily cut through porcelain fused to Zirconia restorations for endodontic access (#Z807-018) or remove the entire restoration (#Z856-018).
Choosing the best product for each case is more complicated than ever. Please call Technical Support at Becden for recommendations on your complex cases.
